The American Presidential Car Across the Decades

How many of us do not envy the US Presindent and his fancy limousine? But in fac his limo is nothing more than a hand-crafted and armored version of the Cadillac DTS.

The DTS was customized by Hess and Eisenhart O’Gara armored vehicle builders who have been building armored presidential limousines. Altough the base is a DTS, little of the original vehicle remains. DeVille’s flush-style door handles have been replaced by a loop-type design apparently borrowed from the generation Buick LeSabre, doubling as grab-handles for the United States Secret Service agents running alongside the car. Exterior examination suggests that the head/tail lights, and the wreath-and-crest emblem atop the grille are some of the few stock components.

The exterior is paneled with five inches of ballistic armor, and is said to be able to withstand anti-tank grenade launchers. The underside of the car is also armored. The windows, which do not open, are transparent armor thick enough to block sunlight, which is the reason the interior is illuminated with naturalistic artificial lighting. The doors require automatic systems to open and the car has a run-flat tire system. The limousine is also environmentally sealed against chemical and biological attacks. A four wheel drive system to improve traction might also be fitted.

The presidential state car is the official state car used by the President of the United States. A variety of vehicles have both officially and unofficially been acknowledged as the presidential vehicle. Since the late 1930s, the U.S. government has specially commissioned vehicles for presidential use, often specifying advanced communications equipment, special convenience features, armor plating, and defense countermeasures. American cars are traditionally chosen for the role. The most recent vehicle to be customized as the presidential car is a GMC Topkick-based, Cadillac-badged limousine often referred to as Cadillac One (a reference to the U.S. presidential aircraft, Air Force One) or as The Beast.

Obama's Car

Barack Obama presidential cars that become observers of the automotive world on hold is the Cadillac One, the product of General Motors (GM) Cadillac specially designed to protect the United States number one person in his official daily activities.

Limousine commonly called The Beast has a special specification like war tanks to protect life of Obama. Although the U.S. Secret Service did not initially launchCadillac One detail to the public for security reasons, but eventually opened to the public as well. What kind of advantages?

Chassis
Armed with the framework of medium-sized trucks and reinforced with Kevlar and 5-inch-thick metal on the stand under the car that resistant from bombs and grenades.

Body
The combination of exterior Cadillac STS and DTS. Made of hardened steel, titanium, aluminum and ceramic-coated to resist attack metal-penetrating bullets.

Doors
Armored bulletproof 8 inch thick and weighs the same as the door of a Boeing 757. The driver’s door-penetrating bulletproof metal (armor-piercing bullets) and can only be opened a maximum 3-inch-wide for security reasons, and facilitate the driver to pay a toll ticket or speak with thepresidential guard beside them.

Driver
Specially trained by the CIA in dealing with any critical security situation.

Driver’s Compartment

Standards, but the dashboard features GPS tracking and communications centers.

Rear Compartment
Capacity of 4 people with bulletproof glass partition. Only Obama had the opening switch. Larger window size than the previous presidential car. Have a “Panic Button” if there are security issues.

Information Technology
Computers equipped with Wi-Fi access, satellite phones which have a direct connection to the Vice President and the Pentagon.

Petrol tank
Equipped with a barrier layer of impact and a special foam to prevent explosion of the tank, although a direct hit and fire.

Tyres
Reinforced with Kevlar, tear resistance and rupture, with steel reinforcement. Allow cars to run in full speed, in any tire conditions.

Boot
Hold Oxygen supply and Firefighting system.

Defense equipment
Equipped with a shotgun, night-vision, and tear gas cannons. There was a tube containing the blood of the President, if needed emergency blood transfusion.

Flag
Flag of the United States and the Presidency is on the front fender with LED feature to highlight the flag at night.

Engines & Fuel Consumption
6500cc diesel engine. The maximum speed of 60 miles per hour (96 km / h).
Fuel consumption is about 8 miles per gallon.

It's official call sign is Cadillac One, but it will always be known as the Obamobile.

This is the top - security armoured limousine which has been custom built to be Barack Obama's presidential car.

It will travel with him wherever in the world he goes.

The President- elect, pictured inset, will have his first ride in the stretch limo when he parades along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington after his inauguration on January 20.

But his Secret Service agents have already been familiarising themselves with the machine they call 'The Beast', built by General Motors in Detroit and based on a Cadillac chassis.

The company refuses to give precise details of how it will perform its primary purpose - protecting the president.

But bulletproof glass and armourplatingare standard throughout and the car is hermetically-sealed to withstand chemical weapons.

As with previous presidential limos it is packed with electronic communication systems to allow Mr Obama to keep in contact with the outside world.

One personal touch will be the remote-controlled ten-CD changer on which he can play his favourite artists, said to include Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan.

Despite the protection afforded by Cadillac One, the Secret Service will be taking no chances when Mr Obama is sworn in as the 44th president.

A three-mile security perimeter will be thrown around the U.S. capital, with no vehicles allowed inside, to prevent a car bomb attack.

The expected two million visitors have been told to be in place at least three hours before the swearingin ceremony begins.

In his first major speech since his election triumph, Mr Obama warned last night that the U.S. could be mired in recession for years if his plan for a £515billion rescue package is delayed too long.

He had been hoping to sign it into law on his first day, but it has been the subject of prolonged wrangling in Congress.

But the report makes it clear the number of dignitaries and the significance of the swearing-in of America's first black president make the inauguration vulnerable to attacks.

The level of security is unprecedented - and already Mr Obama says he feels trapped.

In a candid interview, the American President-Elect described his frustration at being suffocated by the White House bubble.

He is already cosseted in a security cocoon, driven around in a heavily guarded motorcade and unable to walk down the street without a massive security operation.

The 47-year-old revealed how his staff even discouraged him from going body-surfing in Hawaii - and that wife Michelle was amused after pictures of him on the beach without a shirt appeared in the press.

'It was silly, but, you know, silliness goes with this job,' he said.

Mr Obama has vowed to hang on to normal life as long as possible after moving to the White House, which Harry Truman once dubbed 'great white jail.'

The President-Elect said he particuarly determined to keep his Blackberry to have a link with the wider world.

He is trying to avoid the fate of President George W. Bush, who gave up e-mail when he took power in 2001 on the advice of his lawyers.

'They're going to pry it out of my hands,' he told The New York Times and CBNC. 'I don't know that I'll win, but I'm still fighting it.

'What it has to do with is having mechanisms where you are interacting with people who are outside of the White House in a meaningful way.

'And I've got to look for every opportunity to do that - ways that aren't scripted, ways that aren't controlled, ways where.. people aren't just complimenting you or standing up when you enter into a room, ways of staying grounded.

'And if I can manage that over the next four years, I think that will help me serve the American people better because I'm going to be hearing their voices.

'They're not going to be muffled as a consequence of me being in the White House.'

President Bush was forced to give up emails as his lawyers feared electronic communications would have to be preserved for posterity as presidential documents.

There are also concerns that presidential electronic communications could be hacked into by the mischievous or the malevolent.
